I love Christmas. I absolutely love Christmas stories. Even if it is October.Once upon a time Charles Dickens wrote a story for a bad man who was visited by the three spirits of Christmas on Christmas Eve. And that story never gets too old, it goes on and on from one generation to another.Spirits of Christmas is a modern version of A Christmas Carol. Jude has it all, a band, great songs, fame, love of his life. Rock'n'roll star on the top of his career. And he hates it all. He fights with everyo [...]

It took a little getting used to the British English Nicky used in writing this, as this is the first novel/novella I've read not using the American English I've heard all of life. I live on the other side of "The Pond" is the NY City Metropolitan area so seeing word like pajamas spelled pyjamas threw off my reading the story in the beginning, but I eventually got used to reading it.The story remains rule in its basic storyline to the original "Christmas Carol" written by Charles Dickens, update [...]

I've had this one on my e-reader since last Christmas but finally got around to reading it. So glad I did. It's the perfect seasonal read - Christmas Carol with a modern and musical twist, and shades of 'It's a Wonderful Life'. Clever, witty touches with spectres of rock stars kept this light and fun, while the underlying message of course is timeless: 'don't be an egoistic, egocentric bastard'.

Loved, loved, loved this novella by UK author Nicky Wells. Novellas are so terrific this time of year when everything gets hectic and your things-to-do list becomes unruly. This one, in particular, is so fun to read this time of year because it delivers so much to so many readers. You've got your romance, your ghost story, your festive holiday theme. And as a special treat, the structure of the story follows the classic A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. Readers of the Rock Star Romance Trilo [...]

Posted originally reviewedthebook/2014 Spirits of Christmas is a rock and roll take on the Charles Dickens classic A Christmas Carol. I’ve actually never read A Christmas Carol or any of its adaptations so I don’t know how Nicky Wells’ take on it fares in that aspect but I did think it was a really creative and entertaining festive novella. Nicky looked to be having tons of fun when writing this book, with the rock and roll side shining out and this was a refreshing, vibrant tale with a di [...]

When Nicky told me she was writing a Christmas story, I was beyond excited. Once a rock chick, always a rock chick! From the blurb itself, one could easily tell Spirits of Christmas is different from other Christmas stories. I really enjoyed reading it and this time, there were new characters! Jude, the front-man of a band, The Blood Roses and Carrie, his partner with a dream of becoming a journalist. The beginning of the story was quite creepy and I was totally freaked out. However, the story w [...]

With the Christmas holiday season right around the corner, author Nicky Wells gives her readers an early Christmas present with the entertaining novella, Spirits of Christmas: A Rock'n'Roll Christmas Carol. What a great take on Dickens' 'Christmas Carol'! I really liked this modernized Rock & Roll version of a classic that is familiar to all of us.The story opens on Christmas Eve with Jude Shaw, a lead singer of the band The Blood Roses, and his band mates ending a gig by being booed off the stage. All the mates are frustrated, but Jude is the one that piles all the blame on the mates, and ends up leaving them with a huge chip on his shoulder. As he believes that the band will probably break up, [...]

This was a cute rewrite of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Updated to modern times, with a rock ’n’ roll theme, this novel is a fun adventure with the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future, otherwise known to the main character Jude as Past, Present and Fu.Each of these spirits appear to Jude one night just before Christmas. At first each one appears to be a famous, though now-dead rock legend (I have to admit, I didn’t really recognize any of them, except maybe for the first [...]

    • J.B (Debbie) says:

Spirits of Christmas is a fantastic novella by the very talented Nicky Wells. The book begins with a huge row between Jude, lead singer of a rock group, and the group themselves. After being booed off the stage during a local gig, Jude has decided its entirely the fault of the other band members. So, he doesn't hold back in telling them so. He says some horrible and hurtful things and doesn't let the fact that its Christmas Eve stop him being cruel and spiteful. And just when Jude doesn't think [...]

I had never read any books by this author but thoroughly enjoyed this Christmas novella. A very nice twist on Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol & possibly a wake up call a few people could do well to have. Jude, the lead singer and one of the founding members of the rock and roll band, The Blood Roses, is down on his luck. A once promising band that everyone was trying to book, was now getting booed off stage and kicked out of clubs. When he heads to his flat in hopes of his girlfriend being there to console him, he is surprised to find that she is not there and has taken [...]

When I found out that this novel was a retelling of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens I was a little apprehensive about reading it as I wondered if there could be anything new to add to this most traditional of Christmas tales. However, I needn’t have worried as in Nicky’s hands and with the help of some rock and roll magic, this is a fun, festive frolic. The reader meets Jude who is the lead singer of a rock band who initially enjoyed much success but mainly due to Jude’s increasingly [...]

In Spirits of Christmas, Nicky Wells take Charles Dickens' classic, A Christmas Carol, and puts a rock-n-roll spin on it. And she did so splendidly! Jude Shaw, and his band, The Black Roses, were once destined for greatness. But something went wrong at some point. After a particularly awful gig, Jude's life is at a breaking point. Lucky for him, he has a few rock-n-roll spirits to show him the error of his ways. ;) As Jude's spirit guides lead him through his past, present, and possible future, [...]

Jude's turned into quite an unlikeable character, alienating those closest to him. Like Dickens' Scrooge, the first thing the reader learns of Jude is his belligerence, his arrogance, his selfishness. So why keep reading? How can this miserable musician win *our* hearts?Because, like Scrooge, Jude's night of nightmares ensures that his character is destined for change.Because the author has proven, through her Rock Star Romance Trilogy, that she knows how to write a rockin' good story (o [...]

I really enjoyed it and it really got me in the Christmas spirit and ready for the festivities. As much as a Christmas Carol is a classic I actually enjoyed this story more and liked guessing which rock legends the ghosts were going to be.
